WordPress Development ServicesThat Ship a Site You Own, Not a Site You Rent

ROILift’s WordPress development services build WordPress sites that are fast, accessible, SEO-ready, and yours on day one. Custom theme architecture without page-builder bloat, Core Web Vitals targets built into the development (not patched after launch), and a handover protocol that gives you admin access to everything before the final invoice. Not a WordPress site built on a premium theme with 30 plugins that breaks when any of them updates.

Let’s Build Your Growth Plan

Answer a few quick questions so we can show you the fastest path to revenue.

WordPress development services build, redesign, or rebuild websites on WordPress with custom theme architecture, performance targets baked into the build, and full ownership transferred to you at launch. ROILift’s WordPress development services produce sites that pass Core Web Vitals, meet WCAG AA accessibility standards, and ship with SEO foundations (schema, metadata, sitemap, internal linking structure) so the site is ready for organic traffic from day one. Project-based with fixed scope and published pricing.

What it is

Custom WordPress development: new builds, redesigns, and rebuilds on WordPress with custom theme architecture, performance engineering, and full ownership at launch

Businesses that need a WordPress site built correctly: fast, accessible, SEO-ready, and structured for their content model. Not a fit for businesses that need a $500 template install with a logo swap

Custom theme or curated starter theme (GeneratePress, Kadence, Astra) with targeted customization. Block editor (Gutenberg) for content management. No Elementor, Divi, or WPBakery page builders unless the project specifically requires one for content team usability

A WordPress site that passes Core Web Vitals, meets WCAG AA, has SEO foundations in place, and is documented well enough that your team can manage content without calling the developer

The Handover Protocol

What you own on day one after launch. This list is non-negotiable on every WordPress project because the most common WordPress web development complaint is ‘we paid for a site, and now we can’t touch it without calling the agency.’

🌐

Domain

Registrar access with your credentials. The domain is registered in your name, not ROILift's.

🖥️

Hosting

Root access to your hosting account (WP Engine, Kinsta, Cloudways, or your chosen provider). Admin credentials delivered, not held.

💻

Code

Theme files, custom plugin code, and configuration files delivered via Git repository or ZIP archive. The code is yours.

🎨

Design Files

Figma or Sketch source files for all mockups and custom graphics. Not flattened PNGs; the editable source files.

📄

Documentation

Site architecture document, plugin inventory with purpose and license status, theme documentation, content management guide, and the redirect map.

🔑

Admin Access

WordPress admin credentials with full administrator role. No restricted access. No 'editor' role that prevents plugin management.

What WordPress Development Actually Cover

WordPress powers 40-50% of the web in 2026. That scale is why WordPress web development is the most searched web development query in most markets. That ubiquity is both the strength (mature ecosystem, vast plugin library, every developer knows it) and the risk (most WordPress sites are built badly because the barrier to building one is so low). WordPress development services at ROILift exist to build the version of WordPress that performs, rather than the version that happens when someone installs a theme, adds 25 plugins, and hopes for the best.

The theme is the structural layer that determines how the site performs, how content is managed, and how locked-in you are to a specific tool. ROILift builds custom themes or customizes curated starter themes (GeneratePress, Kadence, Astra) rather than using page builders (Elementor, Divi, WPBakery) as the primary build tool.

A WordPress site without SEO foundations is a site that has to be retrofitted later at twice the cost. ROILift ships every WordPress build with: schema markup (Organization, BreadcrumbList, Article, LocalBusiness where applicable), metadata templates (title tag and meta description patterns the content team can follow), XML sitemap configured, robots.txt reviewed, canonical tags on all pages, and a redirect map for redesigns (every old URL mapped to its new destination so organic rankings transfer).

What's Included

Every WordPress web development project at ROILift ships the same core deliverables, organized by when they arrive.

Before launch

  • Discovery Document: Sitemap, content model, feature requirements, integration list, and technical decisions (hosting, CDN, caching strategy) documented and approved.
  • Design: Wireframes for key templates, high-fidelity mockups for homepage and interior templates, mobile responsive designs for all templates.
  • Development: Custom theme or starter theme customization, custom Gutenberg blocks for your content patterns, plugin selection and configuration (minimal, audited, no bloat).
  • Content Migration: Existing content migrated to the new site structure with URL mapping and redirect plan for redesigns.

At launch

  • Qa Completed: Cross-browser testing (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge), cross-device testing (desktop, tablet, mobile), Core Web Vitals validation, accessibility audit against WCAG AA.
  • SEO Foundations: Schema markup, metadata templates, XML sitemap, robots.txt, canonical tags, redirect map activated.
  • Launch Monitoring: Real-time uptime monitoring for the first few days, performance monitoring for the first week.

After launch

  • Bug Fixes: Additional bug fix window post-launch at no additional cost. Bugs are defined as functionality that doesn't work as specified in the SOW, not feature requests
  • Content Management Training: Sessions with your content team covering page creation, content editing, media management, and Gutenberg block usage
  • Documentation: Handover package with site architecture, plugin inventory, theme documentation, hosting configuration, and the content management guide

The Performance and Accessibility Bar

These are the targets ROILift won’t ship below on any WordPress development services project. They’re built into the development process, not tested on the last day.

Metric Target Why this threshold
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)
Under 2.5 seconds

Google’s ‘good’ threshold. Above 2.5s, organic rankings degrade and bounce rates climb. Most WordPress sites with page builders fail this

INP (Interaction to Next Paint)
Under 200ms

Google’s ‘good’ threshold. Heavy JavaScript from page builders and unoptimized plugins is the primary cause of INP failures on WordPress

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)
Under 0.1

Visual stability. Images without declared dimensions and fonts loaded without fallbacks cause CLS failures. Fixable at build time, expensive to fix after

Lighthouse Performance
[VERIFY: 90]+

Composite score covering LCP, INP, CLS, FCP, and other speed metrics. Below 90 on a new build means performance was an afterthought

Lighthouse Accessibility
[VERIFY: 95]+

WCAG AA compliance. Keyboard navigation, color contrast, form labeling, alt text, ARIA attributes

Lighthouse SEO
[VERIFY: 95]+

Meta tags, crawlability, structured data, mobile-friendly. The SEO basics that cost nothing to get right at build time and cost hours to retrofit

Deliverability protection is not defensive work in newsletter management; it is a growth lever.

Industries

Industries We Serve

WordPress development services work differently by vertical because the content model,
the compliance requirements, and the integration needs vary. We go deep in five verticals.

The Build Stack: WordPress Options

Not every WordPress build is the same. The approach depends on the site’s complexity, the content team’s technical comfort, and the budget. Three options exist within WordPress, and the project call determines which fits.

Approach Best for Trade-offs
Custom theme (built from scratch)
Businesses with unique content models, complex layouts, or specific performance requirements that no existing theme accommodates. Enterprise sites, platforms with custom post types, and builds where every kilobyte matters

Highest build cost. Longest timeline. Maximum performance and flexibility. Requires developer involvement for structural changes after launch

Curated starter theme (GeneratePress, Kadence, Astra) with targeted customization
The sweet spot for most business sites. Clean starter theme provides the foundation; custom development adds the specific layouts, blocks, and features your site needs. Fast, performant, maintainable

Lower build cost than full custom. Slightly less architectural control. Updates managed through the theme’s update channel plus custom child theme. Best balance of cost, speed, and quality

Page builder (Elementor, Divi) with performance optimization

Sites where the content team needs visual editing control and is willing to accept the performance trade-off. Not ROILift’s recommended approach but scoped when the content team’s usability requirements demand it

Easiest for non-technical editors. Heaviest on performance ([VERIFY: 200-500]KB JavaScript per page). Content locked to the builder’s format. Switching away from the builder later requires rebuilding every page

Our Total

Completed Work

Post Launch

Newsletter management services onboarding runs on a 90-day rhythm: audit and editorial framework first, then first campaigns in the new rhythm, then segment-optimized sends plus a testing framework. Rebuilding the newsletter before fixing sender reputation and segmentation is a common failure mode; it produces prettier campaigns that land in the same tabs and folders as the old ones.

HONEST COMPARISON

DIY vs Freelance Developer vs Managed WordPress Development

The real competition for WordPress development services is not another agency. It's building the site yourself on a template or hiring a freelance WordPress developer.

⏱️ Typical 8-14 Weeks Timeline

The Project Process

STEP 01 🔍

Discovery

Kickoff meeting with your decision-maker (not the full team; the person who can approve). Brand positioning captured: how the site needs to feel, what competitors' sites get right and wrong, what the current site fails at, and what it does well enough to keep.

STEP 02 🎨

Design

Design system built alongside the mockups: typography scale, color tokens, spacing units, button styles, form styles, and component patterns documented so the development phase has a single source of truth rather than a collection of one-off mockups.

STEP 03 💻

Development

Development starts on approved designs and often overlaps with later design rounds (the homepage can be in development while interior templates are still in design review). Staging environment available from week one. Custom theme built against design system.

STEP 04 🧪

QA

Cross-browser testing across Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. Cross-device testing across desktop, tablet, and mobile. Accessibility audit against WCAG AA: keyboard navigation, screen reader testing, color contrast, alt text review, and ARIA validation.

STEP 05 🚀

Launch

Deployment to the live environment: DNS cutover coordinated with your team (or handled by ROILift if your hosting setup includes DNS management). SSL certificate verified. Server-side caching activated. CDN configured and flushed.

The Scope-Change Protocol

Scope changes happen on every web project. The question isn’t whether they’ll happen; it’s whether the pricing is transparent when they do. ROILift’s scope-change rules are published here and included in every SOW.

Bug fixes within the SOW spec are free for certain days post-launch. A bug is functionality that doesn’t work as specified in the approved SOW

Minor scope additions (adding a page that follows an existing template, swapping an image, updating copy): included in the project if the total doesn’t exceed defined hours of additional work.

Feature additions (new functionality not in the original SOW): change order required before work starts. The change order names the scope, the cost, and the timeline impact. Your signature required before work begins

Design revision round included in the project scope per design phase. Additional rounds with additional cost. Named in the SOW so expectations are set before design starts

Frequently
Asked Questions

What are WordPress development services, and what's included?

WordPress development services at ROILift cover custom theme development (or curated starter theme customization), performance engineering against Core Web Vitals targets, SEO foundations, WCAG AA accessibility, content migration, and a full handover with code, hosting, design files, and documentation. Project-based with fixed scope.

Depends on the revenue model. If you sell physical or digital products as the primary business, Shopify is usually the better platform because its commerce infrastructure is native. If the site is primarily content, lead generation, services, or a marketing site for a SaaS product, WordPress is usually the better platform because its content management is deeper and more flexible. /web/shopify-development/ covers the Shopify option.

Not as the default approach. Page builders add significant JavaScript weight, create content lock-in, and hurt Core Web Vitals. ROILift uses custom themes or curated starter themes with the block editor (Gutenberg) for most projects. Page builders are scoped only when the content team’s daily editing needs specifically require visual editing that Gutenberg can’t accommodate. The build-stack table above shows the trade-offs.

Yes. Domain, hosting, code, design files, documentation, and admin access are all yours on day one after launch. The handover protocol above lists exactly what you receive. Nothing is rented, locked, or retained by ROILift.

Yes. Redesigns follow the same five-phase timeline with one addition: a redirect map. Every URL on the old site is mapped to its destination on the new site so organic rankings transfer. Content migration is included in the project scope.

Get Started

Book a project call. 45 minutes on what the site needs to do, which WordPress approach fits, and what the project would cost and take. No pitch deck. If the project doesn’t justify the investment, we’ll say so and recommend the alternative (a starter theme you configure yourself, a freelancer for a simpler scope, or Shopify if the revenue model is ecommerce).
